The Leprosy Mission International (TMLI) was originally founded in 1874 by Wellesley Bailey, an Irish teacher working in India who was moved by the plight of leprosy sufferers in Punjab. It is now an international Christian organisation active in over 28 countries and working with governments, local communities, health organisations, local NGOs and local churches towards the eradication of leprosy. Its overall mission is "to minister in the name of Jesus Christ to the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of individuals and communities affected by leprosy" (TMLI).
