IPA ENWI is a branch of the global NGO, IPA, and is dedicated to protecting children's right to play. IPA was originally founded in Denmark in response to the changing landscape and increased urbanisation which threatened areas for children's play. The right to play was set out by the IPA in 1977 in preparation for the International Year of the Child in 1979, and was formally enshrined into Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (which states that children have a right to leisure, play, and participation in cultural and artistic activities). Today, the IPA draws together various professionals, such as playworkers, psychologists, academics, designers and health workers in order to better promote the need for and issues affecting (such as war and poverty) play at UN conferences, international and national forums and grassroots level. International Playground Association (IPA); International Association for the Child's Right to Play (IPA) (up until July 2005). The name changes have occurred to reflect the changing emphasis of the organisation, whilst maintaining 'the right to play' in its name.
