| Background Information | Age Concern Cymru began life as the Old People's Welfare Committee, within the National Council of Social Service, providing the elderly with meeting places, and training for care workers. In the 1960s the organisation developed an information role, and underwent several name changes. During the 1970s it expanded into service provision, and became a separate organisation in 1976, calling itself Age Concern Wales. However, it only became independent from Age Concern England in 2003. Currently, services are delivered through local organisations, with a national office undertaking campaigning, research and awareness-raising roles. Age Concern Cymru is a member of AGE, the European Older People's Platform, which operates at EU level. In September 2008, Age Concern England and Help the Aged have announced that they will be creating a new charity in April 2009. Source: www.accymru.org.uk |
