| Background Information | Doctors for Human Rights (DHR) is a global human rights organisation that seeks to "channel the humanity, influence and unique skills of the medical profession into securing worldwide observance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other internationally recognised Human Rights standards." It aims to do this through monitoring and fact-finding missions (in 1994, for example, it was one of only two human rights organisations in Rwanda to document the genocide), improving processes for realising health and human rights (it has campaigned for the UN Secretary General to appoint a Special Advisor on Genocide Prevention and for the UNCHR to create the post of Special Rapporteur on the Right to the Highest Attainable Standard of Health), investigating medical participation in human rights violations (drawing attention, for example, to physicians complicit in torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay), and promoting and improving adherence to human rights law (source: http://www.doctorsforhumanrights.org/)
