The first International Socialist Women's Conference chaired by Clara Zetkin in Stuttgart, Germany, 1907 set out both the need for a women's socialist group and a resolution on women's right to vote. Over the years, the international movement has been restructured (International Socialist Women's Committee, 1926; International Council of Social Democratic Women, 1955) and has undergone several leadership changes (Edith Kemmis, Martha Tausk, Alice Pels) before eventually becoming the Socilaist International Women in 1978. Today "the Socialist International Women is the international organisation of the women's organisations of the socialist, social democratic and labour parties affiliated to the Socialist International." It aims to increase women's participation in politics, promote gender equality and human rights more generally, and to strengthen relations between other women's organisations (source: www.socintwomen.org)
