Background Information

Medical Mission Sisters was founded by Dr. Anna Dengel, who saw there was a lack of medical care available to Muslim women and children in India due to customs prohibiting treatment by male physicians. Today, this international community of Catholic Sisters seeks "to be a healing presence at the heart of a wounded world." Sisters live amongst the poor, oppressed and suffering, providing low-cost alternative health care, education, wellbeing and gender equality programmes, and spiritual guidance and worship. The organisation merged with Mary Giri Sisters in 1953  (source: www.medicalmissionsisters.org)
