| Background Information | Initially founded to address the immediate needs of internally displaced people during the height of the civil war in Sudan, SMP now works with a longer-term view to reduce poverty and empower women in the UK, US, Grenada and Sudan. Recently it has worked in Kordofan, where violence continues and the life-chances for locals remains compromised. In such areas, there is strong emphasis on improving the plight of women and drawing attention to the role women can player in overall peace, as well as the health and education systems (source: http://www.ncfpeace.org/drupal/node/326)
