Back in the sixties, senior leaders of the world's faiths began discussing the idea of a multi-faith coalition for achieving peace, where "the world’s religious communities cooperate effectively for peace." The World Conference of Religions for Peace first convened in Kyoto, Japan in 1970 to realise this aim. Since then, Religions for Peace has been involved in conflict and aid, disarmament, advocacy, poverty, health, and climate change projects, as well as engaging with multi-lateral organisations, such as the UN. It has, for example,  been "building a new climate of reconciliation in Iraq; mediating dialogue among warring factions in Sierra Leone; organizing an international network of religious women’s organizations; and establishing an extraordinary program to assist the millions of children affected by Africa’s AIDS pandemic, [and] the Hope for African Children Initiative." Today, the global Religions for Peace network comprises a World Council of senior religious leaders from all regions of the world; five regional inter-religious bodies and more than seventy national ones; and the Global Women of Faith Network and Global Youth Network.
