SOS Children's Villages UK is an international children's charity (no. 1069204), and the UK-arm of SOS Kinderdorf International, a body founded in 1949 and now active in 132 countries. The charity identify itself as the world's largest orphan charity and cares for 60,000 orphaned and abandoned children, traditionally in purpose-built villages. A further one million are supported in the community through Medical and Social Centres, Schools and Vocational Training Centres. In response to the numbers of children being abandoned, for example through the AIDS pandemic, SOS Children also undertakes outreach work through SOS Family Strengthening Programmes supporting children and families in the community.
