Background Information

The concept for UWC was developed by German education professional Kurt Hahn, who thought that young people could be taught to overcome religious, cultural and racial misconceptions they may hold. The first college seeking to put this theory into practice opened in South Wales (UWC of Atlantic). Today, through 13 colleges across 5 continents, UWC continues to bring "students together from all over the world, selected from within their own countries, on merit and regardless of their ability to pay...[in order] to foster international understanding and peace." It seeks to achieve a sustainable future built on values such as celebrating difference, personal responsibility, mutual respect, compassion, and respect for the environment (source: uwc.org)
