| Background Information | Amnesty International UK is a national section of Amnesty International, a worldwide human rights group with sections and structures in 71 countries, and a campaigning presence in 100. Amnesty was established by British lawyer Peter Benenson, galvanised after reading of the imprisonment of two Portuguese students who had toasted freedom. Benenson launched a newspaper appeal in The Observer in May 1961, entitled 'The Forgotten Prisoners.'
Amnesty works to raise awareness of human rights, and to highlight specific cases of human-rights abuse. It operates a policy of strict impartiality and independence. In the UK, Amnesty has over 260,000 members. London is also home to Amnesty's international secretariat.
