| Background Information | Oxfam is a leading international development and disaster relief charity (no. 202918). Oxfam began life as the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, founded by, amongst others, Canon TR Milford and Professor Gilbert Murray, as part of a national network under the Famine Relief Committee, to aid war-time refugees. In the post-war period, Oxfam's focus moved to the developing world, and it now works in a wide range of areas, including: trade, aid and debt; education; health and HIV/AIDS; gender equality; conflict; climate change and natural disasters; human rights. Oxfam is one of the member agencies of the Disasters Emergency Committee. Oxfam also helped to establish the Fairtrade Foundation. The current name, originally the organisation's telegraph address, was adopted in 1965. Source: www.oxfam.org.uk |
