Description

There is information about the Royal British Legion in an archival guide published in 1994: "A very full archive of papers is retained at the Legion's headquarters and dates back to the amalgamation in 1921, with a very limited selection of material of the predecessor organisations. The Legion's own papers comprise minutes and verbatim records of the annual conference; annual conference reports; minutes of the Executive, Finance and Standing Committees; volumes of monthly and special circulars; and a complete set of the British Legion Journal from July 1921 onwards. Only a very limited amount of correspondence and financial records is available, because there are not ordinarily retained for more than four years." (source: Cook & Waller, Sources in Contemporary British History, vol 1, 1994 and C. Cook, The Routledge Guide to British Political Archives, 2006). However, the Royal British Legion, contacted in March 2007, was in the process of assessing its records anew. It does not have a centralised archive. Individuals keep their own records. As an example, the membership department has Agenda, Minutes etc for Annual Conference going back many years. Some records are now kept in Aylesford, Kent.
