| Background Information | The Advisory Service for Squatters (ASS) is a workers' collective, giving advice to squatters and the homeless. The ASS advises on the legal and practical implications of squatting (the unauthorised occupation of an empty property), with the intention of maximising the chances of squatters remaining in a given property. The ASS also publishes The Squatter's Handbook. The ASS, initially called the Squatters Advisory Service, emerged out of the Family Squatters Advisory Service. This campaign, established by Jim Radford and Ron Bailey in 1970, and supported financially by Shelter, in turn developed out of the Homeless Hostel campaign of the late 1960s.
