| Background Information | Baby Milk Action is the UK arm of IBFAN, the International Baby Food Action Network, and campaigns against what it sees as the inappropriate use of, and marketing of, milk formula in the developing world. In doing so, it aims for the enforcement of the World Health's Assembly's 1981 International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, and is informed by the World Health Organisation estimate that 1.5 million infants a year die due to not being breastfed.
The particular target of IBFAN is what it sees as the irresponsible marketing of milk formula by formula producers. In 1977 INFACT (Infant Formula Action Coalition) launched a boycott of Nestle products in the United States, and two years later IBFAN was formed. The boycott was launched in the UK in 1980.
In 1999, IBFAN had groups in more than 90 countries.
