| Background Information | In its own words, "the overriding aim of the Airey Neave Trust is to enhance personal freedom under the law of any nation in the world." The Trust sponsors research into freedom under the law, against the threats of terrorism, political violence and torture. A second focus of the Trust's work is providing financial support to bona fide refugees within the United Kingdom, with a particular emphasis on support for retraining and post-graduate study. The Trust commemorates the life of Airey Neave, the decorated war hero and Margaret Thatcher's campaign manager during the 1975 contest for the Conservative party leadership. At the time of his assassination by the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army), immediately prior to the 1979 general election campaign, Neave was the Conservative party spokesman on Northern Ireland. Charity no. 297269. Sources: www.aireyneavetrust.org.uk; contacts with NGO, May 2007 |
