| Background Information | The Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) is a secular body that helps the major religions of the world to develop their own environmental programmes, based on their own core teachings, beliefs and practices. Established by HRH Prince Philip, together with Martin Palmer, ARC has its roots in a meeting in Assisi in 1986 (nine years before the organisation's launch as an independent charity) when the Prince called together representatives of the world's five major religions - Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism - to discuss their individual core teachings about creation, and the contribution they could make to conservation. Today ARC acts as a broker between governmental/non-governmental donor organisations and faith groups, to facilitate environmental programmes including identifying sacred sites, protecting faith-owned forests and celebrating the environment.
