| Background Information | The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) Supporters' Group exists to support the direct-action animal rights activists of the Animal Liberation Front who have been imprisoned for their activities against what they see as the unacceptable abuse of animals involved in vivisection and the fur trade. The ALF itself was founded in 1972 (named for the first four years the Band of Mercy, having emerged out of the Hunt Saboteurs Association), and exists within the philosophical tradition outlined in Peter Singer's 1975 work Animal Liberation, which argues that it is morally unacceptable to disregard the interests of animals in processes such as vivisection and factory farming, as to do so is to ignore suffering purely on the basis of an animal's membership of a different species. The Supporters' Group stresses that it is a completely separate organisation from the ALF, and engages in no illegal activities itself.
