| Background Information | CAFOD (the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) is the emergency relief and development agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Alongside relief and development work, it seeks to raise awareness of the causes of global poverty, and lobbies for action towards its alleviation. CAFOD has its roots in the family fast day organised by the National Board of Catholic Women in 1961. It was formally established the following year. CAFOD is a member of the Caritas International Federation, and was a founder member of the Fairtrade Foundation. CAFOD is one of the member agencies of the Disasters Emergency Committee.
