| Background Information | CIWF (Compassion in World Farming) is a campaigning organisation opposed to factory farming methods. It was established by dairy farmer Peter Roberts, responding to animal welfare in the context of increasingly intensive farming. CIWF achieved particular prominence in the 1990s, with high-profile campaigns against live animal exports. CIWF is a member of the European Coalition for Farm Animals, and also has an education wing, the Athene Trust. Sources: www.ciwf.org.uk; Barberis et al 2000 p23-4; Cook & Waller 1994 vol 1 |
