Societal change has meant that an original focus on working animals has been superseded by one on pet ownership and re-homing, including the provision of veterinary care for those unable to afford it.
The Blue Cross works closely with the Society for Companion Animal Studies, an organisation of professionals concerned with the therapeutic benefits of pets.
The current name was adopted in 1950.
