| Background Information | Christian Aid began as Christian Reconstruction in Europe (later the Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service), responding to the post-World War II refugee crisis with the Victory in Europe campaign. During the 1950s, the organisation expanded its focus to include disaster relief and development work. In 1957, Christian Aid Week was launched, raising GBP26,000. Today it raises GBP 14,000,000. Christian Aid is particularly notable for the number of other organisations it has founded. These include Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in 1958, the World Development Movement, with allied churches, in 1969, and the Who Runs the World campaign, which became Jubilee 2000, in 1994. In addition, Christian Aid funded the establishment of New Internationalist magazine in the 1970s, and co-founded the Fairtrade Foundation in the 1990s. Christian Aid is one of the member agencies of the Disasters Emergency Committee. The current name was adopted in 1964. Source: www.christian-aid.org.uk |
