| Background Information | The British Italian Society (BIS) seeks "to increase knowledge and understanding in the United Kingdom of Italian culture in its widest sense, in terms of history, institutions, way of life, language and contribution to civilisation", principally through the organisation of educational and cultural events. The Society was formed through the merger of the Friends of Free Italy, and the Free Italy Committee (later the Movimento Libera Italia), both of which had been formed in the early 1940s, against the backdrop of Mussolini taking Italy into the Second World War in alliance with Nazi Germany.
