| Background Information | The Campaign for a Northern Assembly was a pressure group seeking the devolution of power to a regional assembly covering the north-east of England and Cumbria. In 1997 it issued a "Declaration for the North" in New Statesman magazine, following the election of a Labour government committed to devolution. However, a 2004 referendum for a northern assembly overwhelmingly rejected the plans. The body should not be confused with the Campaign for the North.
