| Background Information | The Campaign for an Independent Britain (CIB) is a cross-party campaign, seeking the end of British membership of the European Union (EU), and its replacement with an intergovernmental system of international relations. The CIB was established following the 1975 referendum on British membership of what was then the European Economic Community, which resulted in a two-to-one margin in favour of staying in. The CIB also acts as an umbrella body for wider anti-EU activity, with the following groups being affiliated: the Labour Euro Safeguards Campaign; the Campaign against Euro Federalism (CAEF) ; Conservatives against a Federal Europe (CAFÉ); the Anti-Common Market League (ACML); the Cheaper Food League. The current name was adopted in 1989. Sources: www.bullen.demon.co.uk |
