| Background Information | The Campaign For Homosexual Equality (CHE) campaigns to change societal attitudes towards homosexuals and bisexuals in England and Wales. The body has its roots in the North Western Homosexual Law Reform Committee, started by Allan Horsfall and Colin Harvey in 1964 to provide a more robust campaigning alternative to the Homosexual Law Reform Society. The Committee for Homosexual Equality was formed in 1969, enjoying a hey-day in the 1970s and early 1980s, with more than 6,000 members and 100 local groups. During this period CHE successfully campaigned to have the decriminalisation of gay sex extended from England and Wales to Scotland and Northern Ireland. The current name was adopted in 1971.
